ENGLE, Olonzo (1824-1910)

1910, Igo, March 30 - Olonzo Engle, one of the oldest citizens of Shasta County, died here at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon[29 March 1910] at the advanced age of over 85 years. He had been seriously ill for two or three weeks. The funeral will be held here at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.~

Olonzo Engle was born in Ohio, December 22, 1824. He came to Shasta County over fifty years ago, and had since made his home in Igo or nearby. The pioneer followed various occupations including mining, stock raising and butchering. He was once steward of the county hospital when that institution was at Shasta. He was also postmaster at Igo for a number of years.

The pioneer leaves a widow - his second wife [Mary O'Dell] - and the following sons and daughters: [Mercelia Agnes] Mrs. John T. Adkins, Igo; [Mary Adeline] Mrs. Walter Peterson, Redding; [Rosa Margaret Elizabeth] Mrs. William Greenville Maupin, Benicia; and William Engle, whose whereabouts has not been known for years.

[A son, Louie born 13 Sept 1871 as a twin to Mary, burned to death August 1879, when trying to light a fire in the stove with coal oil. He is buried in the Igo Cemetery also.]

These are grandchildren:  Harry Adkins, Arthur Adkins, William Adkins; [Lena Margaret Adkins] Mrs. Gus Leschinsky; [Etta Mabel Adkins] Mrs. Henry Arnold; Chas. Peterson, Miss Mary Peterson, George Peterson, and William Peterson.~
