ADKINS, John Thomas (1845-1917)

John was born 4 May 1845 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Henry William Adkins (1819-1892) and Helena Adaline Comfer Adkins (1825-1900). John, 9 years, arrived in California with his parents and sister aboard a ship and then came to Horsetown in 1854. in 1867, at age 22, John registered to vote. When he was 41 years and registered, his description was that of 5 feet, 10 1/2 inches tall, light complexioned, hazel eyes, brown hair and a scar over his right eye. Throughout the years, John's address was that of Horsetown, Eagle Creek, Bee Creek and Igo, all southwestern Shasta County. John and Celia Engle were childhood friends and became sweethearts marrying on 14 July 1869. He registered his livestock brand and earmarks in January 1884. The couple had six children, 4 boys and 2 girls. John died 7 January 1917 at the age of 72 years. He is buried in the Igo Cemetery.~
