Born 8 June 1851 in Hilldale County, Michigan to Olonzo Engle (1824-1910) and Margaret Williamson Engle (1831-1853). "Celia", as she was called, was nine years old when she came to Shasta County with her father and stepmother Mary O'Dell Engle. Celia married John Thomas Adkins, also of the Igo-Ono area, in 1869. She registered her own livestock brand and ear mark in 1902. Family story has it that Celia unknowingly fixed breakfast for a stranger who came to the door one morning. That stranger fit the description of Black Bart whom the authorities were looking for that very day. John and Celia had six children:  William, Lena, John, Etta, Harry and Arthur. The couple farmed, ranched and lived in the southwest Shasta communities their entire lives. Celia died on 25 May 1929,  and is buried in the Igo Cemetery next to her husband John and other family members.~
