1899 November 4, Shasta Courier -

At his home in Cottonwood, on the Shasta side of the stream that forms the dividing line of Shasta, Doctor James Oscar Smith yielded his life October 30, 1899 at Cottonwood, Shasta, California.

Dr. Smith came to California in 1855 and at the time of his death was 78 years of age. For about a half century he was an active, alert citizen and as a physician, agriculturalist, stockman and capitalist, was prominent and respected. He was one of the pioneer builders of Shasta County.

He leaves, besides his widow, Jane Stooer Smith, a son in the East and three daughters in Shasta County, Mrs. Susan Smith Albright [wife of Aaron Albright of Ono], Mrs. Cora (Cordelia) Smith McKeag and Miss Francis Smith.

The Cottonwood people showed respect by closing schools and businesses on the day of his funeral. His grave site is in the Cottonwood Cemetery.
