1868 December 19, Shasta Courier, Shasta, California - LEFT TOWN - J.R. Gilbert, Esq., one of the early pioneers of Shasta, has closed out his business here, purchased the Ball ranch and ferry, on the Sacramento river, and engaged in the occupation of farming and keeping a ferry.~

1869 May 8, Shasta Courier, Shasta, California - (Board of Supervisors' Meeting) - Application of J.R. Gilbert [Jonathan Reynolds Gilbert] for a franchise to keep a ferry on the Sacramento River granted for the term of ten years from the 4th day of May, 1869, and that payment of $3.00 per month be required for the privilege of keeping said ferry.~
